A Call for Cultural Evolution

A Call for Cultural Evolution

“Ethereum’s technological roadmap is maturing rapidly,” Buterin wrote. “But if we want the network to reach its full potential—not just as a financial infrastructure, but as a foundation for decentralized governance, identity, and digital society—we must also evolve our culture.”

He pointed to several areas where he believes the Ethereum community needs to grow:

  • Reducing hyper-financialization : Buterin criticized the overemphasis on short-term profit-making within the ecosystem, arguing that it detracts from Ethereum’s broader mission of enabling open, permissionless innovation.

  • Encouraging constructive dialogue : He urged participants to move away from toxic online behavior, polarization, and tribalism—common ailments in many crypto communities—and instead foster spaces for respectful debate and collaboration.

  • Embracing public goods funding : Buterin reiterated his support for mechanisms like retroactive public goods funding and quadratic funding, which aim to support developers, researchers, and creators working on non-extractive, community-benefiting projects.

  • Thinking beyond crypto Twitter : He encouraged the community to look outward—to engage with regulators, academia, and civil society—not only to defend Ethereum’s values but to integrate them into mainstream discourse around digital rights and internet governance.
